Maggie’s Menu: Valentine Hand Pies

Message from Maggie:

I created these Valentines Day treats for Mr. Magpie.  Happy Valentines Day!

Ingredients:

  • 1 package refrigerated piecrust
  • 1 can cherry pie filling
  • Egg
  • ½ cup sparkling sugar
  • 4 x 5 inch envelope

Instructions:

  1. Unroll pastry on floured surface.
  2. Open a 4 x 5 ½ inch paper envelope and use as a pattern to trace onto parchment paper.
  3. Cut pastry into 4 envelopes and 4 small hearts.
  4. Fill pastry with cherry pie filling halfway up the back flap.
  5. Fold the cutout pastry leaving the upper flap open.
  6. Place heart cut-out on folded edges of pastry envelope.
  7. Brush with whipped egg and  sprinkle with sparkling sugar.
  8. Bake pastry at 375 degrees for 20 minutes or until lightly browned.

Yields about 4 hand pies depending on size of envelopes.
